SALT LAKE CITY — Personal fireworks are once again legal to launch in Utah — given you launch them in the right spot and time frame.
Utah’s law allows for personal fireworks to be launched July 2 to July 5 and from July 22 to 25 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and to midnight on the Fourth of July and Pioneer Day holidays. But communities have the ability to set restrictions they best see fit.
So even though fireworks can be launched during the right time, you can still face a fine up to $1,000 for lighting off fireworks illegally.
That could be just the beginning. Leaders of several Utah fire agencies vow to bill anyone responsible for causing a fire through illegal use of fireworks under this portion of the law.
“Then you’re subject to the damages and the control costs that are possibly there,” said Unified Fire Authority Chief Dan Petersen. “In a restricted area, we are absolutely going to do what we can to find who lit that and hold them accountable. If your house is burned because of a neighbor’s fireworks, that’s not really fair for you. And that risk has to be dealt with.
Draper Fire Chief Clint Smith said there’s a cost for firefighters to respond to a fire and then use resources to put it out. That gets factored into the final bill in addition to any property damage. He estimates that it’s about $1,000 per hour in a place like Draper just to respond to calls and that doesn’t include the costs of the resources, like water.
With all this in mind, here’s a guide to where you can and can’t launch fireworks in 2021.
State and federal lands
Fireworks are banned on all state and federally-owned land, such as national and state parks, as well as land managed by the Bureau of Land Management Land, U.S. Forest Service and Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration. Gov. Spencer Cox also issued an executive order that banned fireworks on all unincorporated lands, public and private.
